MACHINE SHOP.

Henwood Engineering’s machine shop capacity has been gradually built up step by step and is continually growing, offering a wider range of services. Investment into large machines has meant there is now very little we cannot cater for when restoring traction engines and other steam vehicles.

Horizontal borinG

The Richards horizontal boring machine is our largest machine weighing at 26 tons. Its capacity is extremely large with a bed length of 15’ and a max head height from the bottom table of 5’. Facing, boring and inline boring with the rear tailstock are all common functions of this machine with a fixed table size of 6’x4’ and a indexable table 5’x5’

Two Kearns machines work alongside the Richards but are of smaller capacity and a Kearns Type 2 also offers a versatile drilling capacity. This machine is often used for wheel drilling and cylinder block boring.

Kearns type S with its 18” square table finds itself as great use for bearing work. Both machines again are fitted with rear tailstocks.

We can also offer a mobile inline boring service for operations such as crank inline boring and cylinder block re-bores whilst fitted on the boiler.

Turning machines

Horizontal turning of shafts up to 13’ in length and a wide range of diameters up to 38” can be catered for in our conventional manual lathes.

Small batch production can be achieved also on our Herbert capstan lathe for items such as studs and carrot bolts.

Our Webster Bennett 48” vertical lathe is perfect for large diameter work such as front wheels, flywheels and gears. The 4’ chuck can swing 53” in diameter.

Milling and drilling

TOS TK25 milling machine covers all general milling machine duties such as key-ways and facing surfaces.

OD1 5’ radial arm drill for all drilling operations.
